Hiring a good home contractor or home service provider can be a tricky task. Angie's List is a good option - they company tracks reviews and ratings on thousands of contractors, electricians, plumbers, and home care professionals. They even have ratings on doctors, lawyers, daycare providers and other professionals services. When you need to hire someone and have confidence they'll do a good job, Angie's List is an indispensable tool.

How it works. You subscribe to Angie's List on either a monthly or yearly basis, and then you get unlimited access to all the reviews in the system. You can search or browse by category, and see a list of providers along with all the reviews on that provider. There are hundreds to thousands of providers in most categories, although Angie's List has the best coverage of home contractors, doctors, and home care providers like nannies and elder care professionals. The reviews are submitted by other members who have used those providers in the past and have a tremendous amount of details in them.

How much does it cost? An Angie's List subscription starts at $5.95 per month along with a $10 startup fee. If you buy an annual or multi-year package you get a discount, up to 47% off. If you combine a longer term subscription with a coupon code (see below) you can end up paying less than $3 per month for Angie's List. For the use I've gotten out of it, I think that's a very good deal. I've hired at least 5 or 6 people through Angie's List each year, and I've been very happy with the results. Saving the stress of dealing with unprofessional or sloppy contractors is a big benefit for me.

How good are the professionals on Angie's List? I found our family doctor on Angie's List and she's been great, our kids love her and we recommend her highly to all our friends. We hired a general contractor to do our kitchen remodel last year and had great results. Compared to using the newspaper or sites like Craigslist, Angie's List has made life much easier and we've met some really great people through finding them on Angie's List.

Is it just for home contractors? No, you can find lots of doctors, babysitters, nannies, elder care professionals, pet sitters, dog trainers, dentists, vets, movers, tutors, lawyers, and real estate agents on Angie's List (see a complete list on the site). The List has grown dramatically over the past few years and they keep adding categories. I usually go to Angie's List first before searching anywhere else for a local review.

I'm including a coupon code for a 15% discount to your Angie's List subscription here:
